INDEPENDENCE DAY

INTRODUCTION

Independence Day is one of the most important and prestigious national festivals of India. August 15, 1947 is inscribed with golden letters in Indian history. On this day, we got independence from 200 years of British rule and after which the people of India breathed life into an independent country. Celebrated every year on 15th August, this day reminds us of our freedom struggle heroes and their sacrifices. This day not only marks a turning point in the history of India, but it also strengthens the cultural and political identity of our country. This day creates nationalistic sentiment among the countrymen.

STORY OF FREEDOM STRUGGLE

The history of Independence Day is long and full of struggles. Starting from the Revolution of 1857, to the Quit India Movement of 1942 under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, many leaders and common citizens risked their lives. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabh bhai Patel and many other great persons made this freedom struggle successful with their indomitable courage and determination.

CONTRIBUTION OF IMPORTANT FREEDOM FIGHTERS

  • Mahatma Gandhi – Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Satyagraha movement based on the principle of non-violence, gave direction to India’s freedom struggle. They opposed the British through Swadeshi movement, non-cooperation movement and civil disobedience movement.
  • Subhash Chandra Bose – Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose formed the Azad Hind Fauj believing that the British could be defeated only by force. He awakened the wave of patriotism among the countrymen by giving the slogan “You give me blood, I will give you freedom”.
  • Bhagat Singh – Young revolutionary Bhagat Singh adopted the path of violence against the British. Before martyrdom, he raised the slogan of Bharat Mata Ki Jai, which has become a symbol of freedom even today.
  • Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi – Rani Lakshmibai, an embodiment of bravery, fought against the British till her last breath. His sentence “KHOOB LADI MARDAANI VEH TOH JHANSI WALI RANI THI” is engraved in Indian history.

IMPORTANCE OF 15th AUGUST

The day of 15th August reminds us of all the sacrifices that our freedom fighters made for the freedom of the country. This day gives us an opportunity to strengthen our cultural heritage, our sense of unity and integrity. On this day, the tricolor is hoisted across the country and various cultural programs are organized. There is a tradition of the Prime Minister hoisting the tricolor and addressing the nation at the Red Fort in Delhi, which is one of the major attractions of Independence Day.

Every year on this day the Prime Minister of India addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort. On 15 August 1947, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian national flag over the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi.

INDEPENDENCE DAY PREPARATIONS AND CELEBRATIONS

Preparations for Independence Day begin weeks in advance. Schools, colleges, government offices and various institutions celebrate this day with great pomp. Flag hoisting ceremonies, parades, cultural programs, patriotic songs and dances are organized at various places. On this day all the citizens hoist the tricolor in their homes and offices and sing patriotic songs.

INDEPENDENCE DAY MESSAGE

Independence Day is not only a festival but it also reminds us of our responsibilities. After independence, the country has achieved many milestones of progress, but we still have to face many challenges. We all will have to solve problems like poverty, illiteracy, corruption, social inequality together. The real meaning of Independence Day is only when every Indian performs his duties with full honesty and takes the country forward on the path of progress.
